ENG: Meteora or Μετέωρα on Greek, stands for a rock formation in central Greece, hosting one of the largest and most precipitously built complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries, second in importance only to Mount Athos. The complex is located in region of Thessaly and it is one of the sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The name Meteora or Μετέωρα on Greek means “floating rocks”. The Meteora is one of the most important spiritual, religious, cultural and historical sites in Greece. The is a large amount of tourists that visit this place every year. They come from all over the world, but mostly from Serbia, Russia, China…

The biggest monastery of this complex is The Monastery of Great Meteoron, founded in 14th century. There are six of them in this complex and four of them are male and two of them are female monasteries.

For me, as a Serbian girl, this place like many other religious places in Greece has an important historical link. That’s why this is one of my favorite places to visit in Greece. If you are visiting Greece this summer, be sure to spend a day exploring this amazing place.
