Greece – Thassos Travel Guide

ENG: 190 kilometers from Thessaliniki, there is the “Emerald of Aegean”, northernmost Greek island, Thassos. This island is famous by its white marble, dense pine forests, olive groves, long sandy beaches, and the locals mostly work in tourism and beekeeping. Therefore, I recommend that as a souvenir of this island you should take a jar of honey from the black pine.

You can get to the island by ferry from Keramoti and in 45 minutes you’ll be at the island. Or you can get your ferry from Cavalla, you’ll getto the island much faster but this is gonna cost you more. On the “green island” there are three towns. Tha capital of the island is Limenas, and beside usual tourist atractions you can find at the seaside, here you can visit archaeological remains, the ancient theater and archaeological museum. The city of Limenaria is great choice for family vacations with kids. It’s peaceful with long sandy beach and yeou can really relax and rest. Pothos is small cute town, located 12 km from Limenaria, and it’s great choice for younger people. There are numerious tavernas, coffee shops and bar, so you can have fun during all day. Beside these fun things, Pothos is located by one of the most beautiful beaches of this island.

THING TO DO/ SEE ON THE ISLAND:

  1. Cruise around the island- for approximately 10 euros, you can visit the most beautiful beaches of Thassos and have delicious lunch on the boat and try some traditional greek specialites.
  1. Beach at “Alexandra Beach Spa Hotel”( Pothos).
  1. Gyros at small family restaurant near amusement park. Be sure to eat there because the have the best pork and chicken gyros ever!

  1. Plaža Alexsandra Beach Spa Hotel-a

Welcome to Florence of Germany- Dresden!

1800241_10153955308190691_501519849_n

ENG: While I was preparing for this trip, I was exploring and researching a little bit about cities and countries I was planning to visit, considering that I’ve never been to Germany or Poland before. I was surprised when I found out that Dresden was called ” the Florence on Elba”. As I said in previous posts on my blog, Italy is my favorite country and Florence the most beautiful city in the world. So, I was intrigued to see the city that is compared the my favorite city. All the stories I’ve heard about this city were true. This is one of the most beautiful and magical cities I’ve ever seen.

Dresden is capital of German county or state Saxony, with more than 512.000 residents. In wider Dresden area there are more than 1,25 million people living there. The  first cities were founded here in neolithic period ( 75000 BC). Dresden is relatively young city, founded in 12th century by Slavs. The name Dresden, has roots in ancient Slav language that stands for residents of the swampy area – Drežd’any.

Thanks to the mine, Dresden develops very fast, and in the 13th century, in 1260, it has become the seat of the Meisson county, as Civvitas Dresdene. At the beginning of the 18th century, Dresden has become the artistic center. In this town, Friedrich Schiller wrote the anthem of Europe, “Ode of Joy”.

Walking around historical center of Dresden with tourist guide and listening the stories about this city and the important buildings like  Zemper Opera House, Zwinger Palace,  the court’s Roman Catholic Church, Protestant Church, make you imagine the court ladies and gentlemen walking around, heading to Opera or Theater. While you are exploring the center you are impressed with the beauty of the buildings and the fact there are standing there for centuries. But, than, you get surprised when the guide says, there are only 50-60 years old. How?

Dresden is one of the cities that suffered a lot during its history, especially i the 20th century. During the WWII, Dresden was bombed at the end of the war, from 13-14 of February 1945 by American and British Army. 25 000 people were killed and 80 % of the city was destroyed. Dresden is the most bombed city during the WWII. After the war, the city decided to rebuilt all the building in the historical center of the city, including the apartment buildings. They wanted the city to look like it looked before the war.  And they did an amazing job! Thanks to the special kind of marble, they made the buildings look old, like they were never destroyed. UNESCO put Dresden on its World Heritage List in 2004, but the city built a modern bridge in the historical center and ruined the scenery of the old Dresden. That’s why, in 2009, this city was taken off this list.

When we arrived in Dresden, the weather was terrible, cloudy and rainy, so the city was looking a little bit sad and grey. But when the sun showed up on the sky, the city got completely different appearance, a merry and romantic appearance. The weather  that day represented the history of this city. Dresden suffered a lot and yet again it raised like a phoenix.

At the end of the short story of Dresden, I highly recommend you to visit this city, to drink a cup of hot chocolate or coffe on the city square and just enjoy watching the life of the city and its resident on the streets. That’s the best way to get to know the city you are visiting.

Berlin Travel Guide

1231209_10153955315665691_561544973_n

ENG: Dynamic and modern capital of Germany, embodies the historical and political events that have left a strong impact on history of this country. Berlin is the capital city since 1991 and today has 3,4 million residents.

Berlin is the city that really surprised me. I didn’t expect that Berlin would be so lively, fun, diverse, colorful. A week is not enough to visit all the tourist attractions and museums of this city. Tourists have opportunity to take a cycling, boating, bus or walking tours.

Until 1991, until the demolition of the Berlin Wall, Berlin was divided in two part, East and West. Today, all around the city, you can find the remains of this wall, painted by international artist. West Berlin is full of luxurious and modern buildings, where is East Berlin, despite the renovation of the city, you can still feel the spirit of the Soviet era.

Landmark of Berlin is Brandenburg Gate at the Pariser Platz. The most famous boulevard is Under den Linden that streches from Pariser Platz till the Museum Island. Berlin is city of museums and some of them are National Gallery, Old Museum, Jewish Museum of Berlin, Museum of National History, German Museum od Technology…Numerous memorial stand around the city as reminders of turbulent history of this city. Be sure to visit Checkpoint Charlie ( the border between East and West Berlin), East Side Gallery, Memorial of the Murdered Jews of Europe, Berlin Wall ( the largest open-air gallery in the world) .

Two main squares in the city are Alexender Platz ( East Berlin) and Postdamer Platz ( West Berlin). At these sites you can find two places where you can enjoy the panoramic view of Berlin. At Postadamer Platz, in the building named „ Postdamer Platz Panorama Point“, in just 20 seconds, you can be at 100 meters above sea level and enjoy the view as well as the colored beer made of menta or raspberry. At Alexender Platz, you can find TV Tower and in 40 second be at the top of this building and have lunch or dinner at the restaurant, 203 meters above the sea level. These squares are perfect choice for shopping. Here you can find everything you need, on any price. One more shopping place worth visiting is Berlin’s flea market.

Historical, political and travel center is definitely the Government’s district. Which is divided by Berlin’s Spree River. South of this area is the Reichstag Building – the German Parlament since 1999.

I hope you’ll have the chance to visit this amazing city and don’t forget to visit the zoo, aquarium, numerous parks, Madame Tussauds Museum and drink some beer with your friends. I’m sure that this city will make you breathless, as it made me.

SRB: Dinamična i moderna prestonica Nemačke, oličenje je istorijskih i političkih događaja ovog grada. Berlin nosi titulu prestonice od 1991. godine. Danas u ovom gradu živi 3,4 miliona stanovnika.
