Parga Travel Guide – Town on the coast with the vibe of an island

ENG: Welcome to Parga. This small town by the Ionian sea, in the Greek province of Epir, is the proof that you do not need to go to some of the Greek islands to feel the real spirit of Greece. Parga is located 60 km from city of Ioannina, between Preveza and Igoumenitsa.

This town is not like other Greek seaside resort in the continental Greece. It has the atmosphere and beauty of world famous Greek islands. The first thing I thought when I saw this town, was that it reminds me a lot of Portofino and Amalfi coast. This city is the greatest proof of its turbulent history.  During its long history, the life of the locals was influenced by Venetians and Turks. Between the 15th century and 1913, there were numerous clashes between the two sides. The city of Parga was finally free after Balkan Wars in 1913, when Turks were defeated.

One of the attractions you should not miss is the Venetian Castles on the top of the hill beside the port. Sunsets from the top of the fortress are some of the most beautiful moments spent in Parga. The castle was built in 11th century by Pargians, to protect their city from pirates and Turks. From 13th century until the liberation of the city in 1913, the castle had been changing its owners very often. Turks demolished the castles several times, and Venetians rebuilt it.  The last famous resident of this castle was Ali Pasha. During his rule, Turks built were safe boxes for arms and guns, secret passages to the sea, jails, warehouses, two-block houses, Ali Pasha’s harem and Turkish bath. You can see the life path of the castle on the entrance. There you can find winged lion of St Mark, Ali Pasha’s emblems, the name ” Antonio Bervass 1764″ and two-headed eagles.

Beside Venetian fortress or castle, around Parga, on the hill above the city, you can see Ali Pasha’s fortress. This fortress is harder to rich and it’s not that preserved as Venetian one. If you are adventurous, you can take a longer walk to the hills or take a ride with a small train that drives tourist to the fortress. The price of the ride, in May, was 8 euros per person.

Parga is the city that has a lot of beautiful beaches. In the city you can find, the main town beach, Krioneri, and the smaller one beside it, Piso Krioneri. Across the Krioneri beach, there is a small island called, Panagia island, dedicated to Mother of God. You can swim to the island and visit two small churches that are settled there. My favorite beach is Valtos beach, but I will tell you little bit more about it on another blog post. Valtos beach deserves a special post, because of the beauty that surrounds the beach and so many amazing photos that I took there. So, keep following my blog in the next days to read more about it. Another beach that I would recommend to you is Lichnos beach. It is located 4 km from Parga. You can walk to the beach, but during hot summer days, I recommend you renting a car or motorcycle. Beside these easily accessible beaches, there are some amazing beaches that are little bit far from Parga, like Sarakiniko and Ai Giannaki beach. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a chance to visit these two beaches but I hope I will visit them on my next visit to Parga.

Parga is one f those town that you are never bored. During the day, you are enjoying amazing beaches, beautiful nature around you, sea and sun. During the night, this town turns into cosmopolitan town, full of life, full of restaurants, cafes, bars, clubs with live music. Therefore, Parga is considered to be a true elite resort on the Ionian coast.

During summer, there are numerous excursions organized from Praga. That way you can get to know the surroundings of this town. You can visit Corfu, Ionian island like Lefkada and Kefalonia, Paxos and Antipaxos, Sivota… One of the unusual excursions is the excursion to the Archeon river. This river is one of the most famous landmarks of the ancient world. Archeon river was the place were the souls of the dead were passing to the underworld, Hades. On the banks of the river, there is settled the ancient 5000 year-old temple, where ancient Greek priests communicated with the dead. Beside this one, you can enjoy the visit to the olive oil factory.

Parga is one of the destination that has been on my travel wishlist for such a long time. It got there thanks to the beautiful pictures I saw on the internet. But know, it’s on my list of the destinations I would love to visit again, the list of my favorite destinations in the world. It deserved that place, because of its beautiful nature, amazing atmosphere and the charm of the locals. There are so many places to visit in Parga, that I couldn’t visit during my stay, but I hope I will go there again soon. I’m already missing  the turquoise sea, golden sand and the smell of oranges, olives and bougainvilleas.

Kada dođete do Krioneri plaže preko puta plaže ugledaćete ostrvo Bogorodice ( Panagia ).

Tokom dana moćićete da uživate u fantastičnoj prirodi, okruženi šumama i maslinjacima a uveče u kosmopolitskom duhu, restoranima, barovima, kafićima i živoj muzici.

Već mi nedostaje tirkizno plavo more, zlatan pesak, miris pomorandži, bugenvila i maslina.

Hotel review: A fairy tale in Parga – Racconto Boutique Design Hotel

ENG: Living in a big city can be exhausting. We are giving our best on our jobs, working on our carriers, training to be in the best shape, but we are forgetting about ourselves, or mind, our soul. When you are feeling overwhelmed, it’s time to take a break and spend a week or even a weekend in western Greece, in Parga, in Racconto Boutique Design Hotel.

As the owner of this splendid hotel, Sophie Vlassi said, they are here to help you “maintain the balance between your mind, your body and your soul”. The name of this hotel says it all. This is a fairy-tale ( “racconto” in Italian), where you can be yourself, relax and let your mind, body and soul fill with positive energy.

Racconto Boutique Design Hotel is a brand new hotel, opened in 2015. It’s settled on the hill above the magical town of Parga, surrounded by olive trees and fresh Mediterranean air. Only 900 meters from this little paradise, you can enjoy and explore one of the most beautiful cities by the Ionian sea. Racconto Boutique Design Hotel has 8 standard double rooms and 3 apartments. Every room has a terrace and apartments have their own little gardens.

The best way to explain you the essence of staying in this hotel is to describe you one perfect day spent in this gorgeous hotel. After peaceful night spent in more than comfortable bed, I woke up rested and ready for summer day in May. If you are like me, a person that likes to start the day with meditation, you can find a perfect spot made just for this purpose above the swimming pool. There, surrounded by olive trees and breathing fresh air coming from Ionian see, you are working one your mind, relaxing, visualizing and setting your mind for the next achievements. When you find your peace and realize your blessing, it’s time to take care of your soul and body- it’s time for breakfast. For me, food is not just a substance we take in order to survive, for me food brings alive all my senses and feeds my soul, too. Right by the pool and meditation area, is settled one of the most beautiful breakfast areas I have ever seen and enjoyed. The breakfast in Racconto Boutique Design Hotel is made of fresh local ingredients, brought to you from local farms and markets. One of the local products that made my every morning is the cheese from Metsovo. Little things like that, or like  freshly baked bread and pastry, make difference when it come to the quality of hotel services and guest’s satisfaction. And then, there’s only one thing left to maintain the balance, your body. After breakfast, every morning I’ve spent in Racconto Hotel,  I enjoyed swimming in the pool, lying on the sunbed, sunbathing and reading.

If you want, you can spend the whole day like this, just relaxing by the pool, eating fresh fruits and drinking cocktails. Or, you can take a short walk to the town, explore and have lunch or dinner, by the see,  in one of numerous restaurants.

Racconto Boutique Design Hotel is the first hotel of this kind in the area. Thanks to its magnificent, monochromatic and minimalist design, this hotel is the most sophisticated place on the coast of Ionian sea. The architect and designer of hotel, Panos Petridis, has created the heaven. There is nothing to distract you. Every little thing in this hotel, is made by luxurious Italian and Greek brands and it’s created to make you feel peaceful and relax, like you are in the completely different universe, away from everyday problems.

For the end of this review, I have to say that I was delighted and impressed by the courtesy and kindness of the hotel staff and the owner of the hotel, Sophie Vlassi.  This was definitely one of the best hotel experiences I have ever had and I truly hope I will stay again in Racconto when I need some peace and quite in my life.

Thank You Racconto!

Hvala Racconto!

What to see and do in Venice – Venice Travel Guide- Part II

ENG: In last travel guide, I was talking about the artistic and historical importance of Venice. Today, I have prepared for you a list of things that I love to do and places I think you need to see in Venice. I hope you will like it! If you have something to add to this list and share with the other readers, write it down in the comments!

SRB: U prethodnom turističkom vodiču, pisala sam o umetničkom i istorijskom značaju Venecije.

1. Take a gondola ride

Gondola is traditional Venetian rowing boat that is especially built to suit made for shallow waters of the lagoon. Riding with this boat gives you unique experience that you can only find in Venice. If you are coming to Venice with your sweetheart, this is something you can to miss. During your ride between the Venetian houses and palaces, you will enjoy the stories and songs, told and sang by famous Venetian gondoliers. This is what makes Venice, one of the most romantic destinations in the world.

2. Visit Doge’s Palace

Start your Venice sightseeing tour by visiting the Doge’s palace. This palace on the St Mark’s square was residence of Venetian rule, the Doge. The palace is settled and connected to the St Mark’s basilica and was built in Venetian gothic style. Here was located the center of power of Venetian republic. The construction of the building we can see today started in 1385 and was finished in 14th century. Today, this breathtaking palace is a museum open for tourist from all over the world. This museum was opened in 1923.

3. Visit Saint Mark’s Basilica

Right to the Doge’s palace is one of the most famous churches in the world, basilica of St Mark. The facade of the church is settled on the east end of St Mark’s square but the rest of the church is connected to the Doge’s palace. This church was a private royal chapel for Venetian ruling family during the Golden age of Venetian republic. The construction of the church started in 828, when Venetian merchants stole the relics of a Saint Mark in Egypt. Today’s appearance the church got in 1063. The inspiration for its design was the Church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople. The original appearance of the church was modest, without any frescoes and sculptures. The church as we know it, got its appearance after Constantinople and the Hagia Sophia were looted in the fourth crusade, in 1204. Because of its luxurious design and gold ground mosaics and considering that it was a symbol of Venetian wealth and power, the church got the nickname “Chiesa d’Oro” or “the church of gold”.

Posetite crkvu Svetog Marka

4. Visit Bridge of Sighs

“Ponte dei Sospiri “ or “ The Bridge of Sights” is one of the most famous bridges in Venice. This bridge goes over the canal Rio di Palazzo and connects San Marco and Castello city area in Venice. The bridge also connects the Doge’s palace with “ the new prison“which was the first  building in the world built for this purpose. Over this bridge, the prisoners took they last look of the world and were taken to the prison. In that time, imprisonment was very cruel, and people would get a life long prison sentence even for small offenses. Therefore, people created this legend of  “ bridge of sighs“. Nowadays, there is a ways better and brighter legend. The legend says that if a couple in love pass under the bridge at sunset and they kiss, their love will last forever. Bringing this legend to life is definitely one of the things you need to do in Venice. The baroque bridge is located near the St Mark’s Square so tourist can find it very easy and take pictures from Ponte della Paglia and Ponte della Canonica, or during their ride in gondola. “ The bridge of sighs“ is one of the most visited and most important Venice points of interests for tourists around the world.

Posetite “Most uzdaha”

Most se nalazi blizu trga Svetog Marka i lako ćete ga pronaći dok obilazite grad. Najbolje fotografije ovog mosta ćete napraviti sa mostova Ponte della Paglia i Ponte della Canonica ili tokom vožnje gondolom.

5. Visit Rialto bridge

One of the best places to visit in Venice is Rialto bridge. This is the oldest bridge across the Grand Canal and connects the districts of San Marco and San Paolo. Firstly, there was pontoon than wooden bridge. In 1551, the Venetian Senate open concurs for the stone bridge across Grand Canal. A lot of important and famous artist of that time, applied with their projects. But at the end, they choose the solution by Antonio da Ponto. The construction started in 1588 and was finished in 1591. Beside its historical importance, you should visit this bridge to enjoy impressive view over Venice.

Ovo je najstariji most preko Velikog kanala i povezuje oblsti San MArko i San Paolo.

6. Spend an afternoon at Lido di Venezia

After long sightseeing tour around Venice, I suggest you to spend a peaceful and relaxing afternoon at Lido di Venezia. This island is 12 km long and with a width between 200 and 1600 meters. It located at the entrance to the Venetian lagoon. This beautiful part of Venice makes this city one of the top city breaks destinations. But this little island is also one of the best holiday destinations in Europe because during the summer, it becomes home for numerous tourists. The majority of tourists are Italians from nearby cities. From 1932, Venetian Film Festival or “ La Mostra” is held here on Lido di Venezia.

Tokom leta, ovde dolazi veliki broj turista. 7. Visit Venice during the carnival season

What to do in Venice? Well, beside sightseeing and learning about history you can enjoy carnival in Venice.  During this period, Venice is becoming the place of masks, colors, music and fun. The Venetian carnival is maybe the most popular carnival in the world, but it is definitely the oldest one. History of the carnival starts in 1162 when Venetians took the victory in the battle over Aquileia. The victory was celebrated on the St Mark’s square and this event it’s considered to be the real start of Venetian carnival. The first written records about the carnival are from 1296. The word “carnival” comes from Italian phrase “carne vale” which means “ the meat is living”. Firstly, the carnival was held before the Easter fasting, which explains the title of the event. Today, the carnival is held during January of February. The low season when it come to tourism in Venice, was during winter, therefore the government of Venice decided to organize this event during this period. The carnival approximately lasts for 3 weeks and it’s liveliest during the last weekend. During carnival, you can enjoy numerous events, concerts all over the city, on the bridges on the streets. The main stage is settled on the St Mark’s Square. There are also numerous balls held in Venetian palaces.

Posetite Veneciju tokom sezone karnevala

Otkud baš ovo ime i ovo značenje?

If you want to enjoy the most beautiful view over Venice, visit one of the most picturesque places in this city, campanile di San Marco. It’s located in the corner of St Mark’s Square and it’s 98, 6 meters high. The view from the top of it is priceless.

9. Visit Basilica Santa Maria della Salute

Santa Maria della Salute or Saint Mary of Health is a Roman Catholic Church and one of the symbols of Venice. It’s located at Punta della Dogana in the district of Dorsoduro, between the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal, at the Bacino di San Marco. If you are coming to Venice by boat, you will be able to see it from St Mark’s Square. This church was built after the terrible plague in 1630. The people of Venice wanted to build a church to Santa Maria della Salute to protect them after this devastating event. The construction of this baroque basilica started in 1631. The church was designed by Baldassare Longhena.

10. Get lost in Venice

One of the best things you can do in Venice, is to get lost. Wander the streets and discover new interesting places in Venice. You can find beautiful small family restaurant with amazing Italian cuisine, cute little antique shops and Venetian palaces with breathtaking architecture. You will see and truly understand why Venice is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Europe.

11. Have a cup of coffee at St Mark’s Square

I know! It’s such a cliche! But, admit it! The first thing you think of, when you are thinking of the activities you can do in Venice, is drinking that amazing, delicious espresso, on the main city square, while watching the Dodge’s Palace and St Mark’s Cathedral, watching the people and the birds, and just simply enjoying the sun. Isn’t it beautiful? Although, here, the coffee can cost way more than in some small street, couple of blocks away, the experience and the feeling you are going to get by drinking this famous Italian drink, is priceless.

Popijete kafu na trgu Svetog Marka

Znam!
